Lent and "giving up". Or is it ..."letting go"?

Image
A good friend, this week, shared her intention of "giving up" something she really likes - I think it was chocolate. This, because of Lent.  A time very auspicious for character building given that " it is in the air" that so many give up things, or fast, or do small sacrifices here and there (which can be 'huge' at times), so that there is that 'feeling of support, 'we are all doing it' energies, etc., etc. Well, when she put it in f acebook, I was practicing how to "play" in that social networking cyberfield, getting 'lost' all the time, not knowing what to do, etc., etc., and decided to "comment" on her post. The thought that came up was around the nuances of letting go, of allowing things to happen, or accepting what is, releasing, yielding to, observing, witnessing, not clinging, AND not that sense of "giving up" as in "I have it already and I am going to 'give it', 'offer it', don...

A little prayer I came across today...or...did it come across to me...?

As I was preparing to start the work of  the day, there was this pile of papers that was clamoring for me to put it in the 'file' stack. That means, the stack that will get very close to oblivion, and most certainly, within a long time from now, months maybe, it will be 'touched' again as just a few of its papers make it to yet another file, and the entirety of the remaining stack will end up in the recycle bin. Well, there was this folded piece of paper, a 'memoir' from a service attended at The Church of the New Covenant , where the Pastor, I believe, is a very special man, rich in life, in joy, and very open to diversity, and community. He also happens to sing choral music, and is very adept at it. Nevertheless, this 'jewel' that follows, was part of a service at CNC some time ago. I share it with gusto: it has a lot of 'humanity' in it. Here it goes, a poem by Ernesto Barros Cardoso, Brazil: God of Life, prepare our hands for a touch a...

Líderes Comunitarios... una llamada

Image

The Welcoming Prayer

Just the other day I received the periodical - magazine or newsletter - from " The Contemplative Outreach ", the communication arm of Father Thomas Keating 's beautiful work during the last decade or so. Several things really 'hit' me: i.e., called my attention to them, which I want to share with you. Just like the image of school friends sharing a new found joy, ...or is it - 'toy'? And, why do we use the phrase..."hit", as in "then it ' hit ' me"? That's not too nice, no? Expectations?...hhhmmmm!. Here it goes: grab on, there are several "hits' on this one... " What God arranges for us to experience at each moment is the best and holiest thing that could happen to us ". - Jean Pierre de Caussade. Well, it is hard for me to conceive of a 'god' that is playing with all our lives "arranging events to happen" for each and every sentient being, as if I were some sort of marionnette (...

Today's thought...hhhhmmmmm...maybe relevant!

Image
The daily planner had this heading and it caught my eye...hhhmmm? " To have that sense of one's intrinsic worth which constitutes self-respect is potentially to have everything . " by Joan Didion. Starting from the back..." to have everything ", is nice of course, but meaningless. It is "The Dream", "Disneyland" stuff. The marketing media hypnotic - and many times subliminal - messaging. At the end of the day, and at "the end" - you know what I mean? - who cares? Just because you had more toys than I did, we are going to the same..."base": 6 feet under...and that's a maybe! So forget that "have everyhing" line, but maybe there is more. Let's see. " Potentially " that sounds like a "safety" expression put in by the author to not really provide certainty in her statement. It sort of softens it; allows for other possibilities. It is used to avoid conflict, to go to the 'gray...
